The rule of thirds 

-placing the subject on the intersected lines will create a more interesting photo
- focus on the lines not on the rectangles
-usually this method id used when taking horizontal pictures
-take the picture with your object int the center to create a dramatic affect
- it will be difficult to use this method when  you are up close to your subject
-if taking a self portrait, center your eyes on the top horizontal line
-when taking a picture of a person, waist up, place them on the right
